What is an NPI?

The National Provider Number (NPI) is a unique identification number for covered health care providers

NPI's are 10 digit number unique to each covered health care providers provided by NPPES (national plan and provider enumeration system).

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996, included Administrative Simplification provisions.

In these provisions were a mandate for standard unique identifiers for all health care providers and health plans that are covered by HIPAA. CMS developed the system to assign these unique identifiers. To learn more on how to get your NPI application visit the CMS website or NPPES website here: Click

NPI numbers have two types:

  1. Individual service providers, this is where you can look up doctors, Physicians, chiropractors, dentists, Nurse practitioners, and others.
  2. Business or organization that provides services or health care supplies such as hospitals, nursing homes, laboratories, pharmacies, and home health care agencies.

Providers can apply for an NPI by completing a paper application, through a Web-based application, or through an organization (an employer or professional organization). Providers need to apply using one of the options above and need to apply only once. Providers should apply for their NPI if they have not already done so. There is no cost to obtain an NPI number.

Make sure CMS (centers for Medicare and Medicaid services) has the correct information if you need to you can update the NPI here: NPI update information
