What is PECOS?
PECOS (Provider Enrollment and Chain/Ownership System) is the e-portal that physicians use to enroll in Medicare. Some physicians don't have current records in PECOS because they haven't submitted any enrollment information updates to Medicare within the last 5 years.
With the launch of our brand new real-time PECOS search, we aim to make things as simple as possible when it comes to finding out if you or your physicians are enrolled in the Provider, Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System.
PECOS was put into place on January 6th, 2014. The main function of the system was to better combat Medicare fraud says CMS. Which has reported a downward trend in Medicare fraud cases.
The PECOS electronic system is an absolute must for any providers. If a provider does not enroll in the system there is a great chance they will suffer denials on their claims they send to Medicare. Luckily this program is free for most providers and all you need to is enroll. However, if you may need to check: HERE if you need to provide a fee for enrollment.
Be aware that there are currently two ways you may enroll in the Provider, Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System (PECOS) you can either do this online at : PECOS CMS

If you choose the paper application this will add time onto the approval process.
